Three live animals quarantine centers, whose construction launched six year ago at a cost of 210 million birr, have been completed, the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries said.
Built in Jigjiga, Humera and Metema towns, the quarantines will go fully operational this Ethiopian fiscal year (2017/18), Abrham Tesfaye, public relations head at the ministry told FBC today.
According to him, Jigjiga quarantine can handle 30,000 live animals, while Humera and Metema handle 6,000 animals each.
A fourth quarantine station, which was finalized three months ago at Mile town in Afar regional state, can handle more than 30,000 live animals, he added.
The quarantines help the country boost export and income from the sector and prevent smuggling of live animals.
Ethiopia earned over 64 million US dollars in the concluded fiscal year exporting 237,000 live animals.
