Leather Industry Development Institute said that it has planned to build a new Leather Industry Village, constituting more than 17 factories, with a cost of 80 million USD.
In his exclusive interview with WIC, General Director of the Institute Wondu Legesse said that in the second Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP), the institute has targeted to build a Leather Industry Village on a land of 200 hectares in Mojjo.
The feasibility study is already finalized and income generating border demarcation activities have already started, he added.
The construction is expected to be completed within 3-5 years, he said, adding that the plan incorporates the construction of infrastructures such as market malls, banks and schools.
In the first GTP period, the institute has collected over 135 million USD from leather and leather products, he said.
He also said that the institute has worked intensively on skill and knowledge transfer and capacity building; thirteen second degree graduates and six PhD trainees are already joined the industry.
According to the General Director, Leather Development Industry has created job opportunities for over 18,000 citizens so far.
