Nation Finalizing Preparations to Become Full Member of Extractive Industries Transparency

Ethiopia has reportedly been working to fulfill the necessary requirements which would enable it to become a full member of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).

The report on the status of the country’s aspiration to join EITI was compiled by the Ministry of Mines and the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) National Steering Committee.

Mines Minister Tolosa Shagi said on the occasion Ethiopia has been working hard to become a full member of the EITI, of which it has been a candidate since March, 2014.

He noted that being a full member of the EITI would enable the country to properly utilize its untapped natural resources.

The minister added that Ministry of Mines is working closely with the steering committee.

Membership would also help manage mineral resources in a transparent manner and ensure the benefits of the society.

Ethiopian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EEITI) Director, Merga Kenna said on his part the report indicates the nation’s effort to bring transparency and accountability in areas of natural resources, particularly in the mining sector.

Becoming a member of Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative would also help attract investors in the sector, the director said, adding that the EITI has been working in collaboration with different stakeholders.
