Indian, Dutch Flower Companies Engage in Ethiopian Market

Two new private flower firms from India and the third from the Netherlands have lately joined the Ethiopian flower market, according to Ethiopian Horticulture Agency.

The companies have already received 190 hectare of land from the Amhara region  and have started their production in Bahir Dar City and around.

“The newly entrant companies will start exporting flowers in a year and six months period,” Mekonnen Hailu, Spokesperson of the Agency told The Daily Monitor.

In the 2013/14 fiscal year, Ethiopia’s generated income surpassed 245 million USD recording 6 percent increase from 2012/13 forex income of 230.5 million USD.

140 local and foreign companies in Ethiopia are exporting their horticulture products.

Netherlands accounts for 80 percent of flower export destination followed by Germany, Norway, Belgium, UAE, France, Italy and the US.
