Amhara Region to get Integrated Agro-industrial Park

The Amhara Regional State is going to establish an integrated agro industrial park in Bure town, located to the east of the region, during the course of the second Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP II) in its bid to enhance the region’s industrial base.

Member of the central committee of the Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM) and Minister of the Ministry of Industry, Ahimed Abitew, made public the region’s plan to develop the industrial park while presenting its GTP II for the scholars gathered at Addis Ababa to discuss the way forward and achievements of the party in the past 35 years.

Ahmed noted that development of industrial parks in different part of the region is in line with the federal government’s policy of gradual transition to an industrial economy.  The region will develop more than 100 industrial shades on 2,000 hectares of land in a bid to strengthen its industrial foundation.

“Establishing an industrial park will pave the way to enhance the flow of investment toward the region coupled with a concerted investment promotion activity,” said the minister.

According to Ahmed, the country has planned to establish 17 integrated agro industrial parks in different areas.

The minster noted that agro industrial parks are established with in 100 kilometer radius distance from input source and output market.

The minister also highlighted that agro processing parks are planned to be developed in the rift valley areas of Oromiya, at Hawassa of the Sothern Nations Nationalities and People’s region and western Tigray among others.

Ethiopia has embarked on the development of two types of industrial parks; integrated agro industrial parks and large scale industrial parks. The Ethiopian government has unveiled its plan to develop industrial parks in major economic corridors of the country at a total cost of 10 billion USD within the coming ten years period. One of such industrial parks whose development is underway in Hawassa is expected to be completed in the near future.
