The Gibe III hydroelectric project has begun generating 800 megawatts electric power, according to the Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP).
The project, which has 10 Francis turbines with a power of 187 megawatts each for a total installed capacity of 1,870 megawatts, is now 96 percent complete, EEP said.
Eight of the turbines have begun generating power. Because of the dam’s current water volume, the turbines are generating from 100-120 megawatts now, it was noted.
According to EEP, installation of the ninth turbine has been done, while the tenth turbine will be installed soon.
The power generated from Gibe III helps fill the power supply gap created due to the impact of El Niño weather phenomenon on water volume of other hydropower dams.
