Preparations are underway to build a national load dispatch center, said the Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP). Following the completion of Gibe III hydropower plant, Ethiopia’s current power generation capacity rose to more than 4,000 megawatts.
In order to ensure a safe and secure grid operation, the country therefore needs a modern load dispatch hub. Hence, the Ethiopian Electric Power is going to build a load dispatch center with 40 million Euros loan obtained from the French Development Agency (FDA).
Engineer Azeb Asnake, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ethiopian Electric Power, said the load dispatch helps control and transmit power to the required area from one center.
In addition to helping to control the country’s power system, the center shows signals when power transmission networks are damaged, thus enabling EEP to respond right away for power cut and maintenance, she said.
EEP is currently preparing bid documents and selecting sites for the construction of the sector, the CEO noted.
According to Engineer Azeb, the construction of the center will be finalized in two years’ time.
